Photo trek in Moab area, entire blog in 1 entry

In June 2009 I joined approximately 50 photographers in a five day trek to some of the areas around Moab Utah. Moab is located in the southeast corner of Utah.

Most of our time was spent in Arches National Park. We split into several groups, so we did not have too many photographers in an area on a given day.

On my first day out, I went to Landscape Arch. Landscape Arch used to be much thicker, but part of it tumbled in the late 1990's. Note how thin the right hand section is. This arch is over 300 feet long. Thanks to Nikon I got to try their 8mm fish eye lens for the first two images.

Look on the trail for a scraped rock near the base of the long log. That is where I was standing to take the first image.

See the variation on the rock , Juniper and stage brush.

The next day I got my first view of the Balance Rock area. It is a very large object in the middle of a relatively flat area. Just image what caused it. Why did this survive a raging river? How was it different from the rock around it? Why was this different material here? If you know, please post a response.

These children are climbing on a very small section on the base of Balance Rock.

Sorry, could not get the next image to turn properly in blogger. Turn your head or your laptop.

Besides the physical formations in the Moab area, the essence is in the lighting.

Not all images came be taken on your feet. Here is one of the photographers shooting a small image at the Petrified Dunes.
The next image, I took from the same height.

Thelma and Louise. Their car went off the cliff at this location in Dead Horse State Park. Below is the Colorado River. To preserve the landscape they had to rig up nets to catch the car when it went off the cliff.
